Above is an image of General Robert E. Lee after his surrender to Union General Ulysses S. Grant. Were Grant's terms of surrender harsh?

Above is an artist's depiction of the famous battle between the two "ironclads," the Confederate Merrimac and the Union Monitor. Although the Monitor was victorious in the wild new battle, the Merrimac destroyed several Union ships in Baltimore Harbor, hurting the Union navy tremendously. What other new technology was invented during the Civil War?

Above is an artistic image of the violent abolitionist John Brown. There is a lot of symbolism in this busy image. What does the smoke in the background represent? Can you identify the two flags? What is Brown stepping on in the front? Finally, what words do you think are coming our of his mouth?

Above is a map of territories acquired by the US in North American. Please note the land the US gained as a result of the Mexican American War (1846-1848) which is titled, Mexican Cession. This land was Mexico's "Northern Territory." After gaining (robbing?) this new land, the US stretched from "sea to shinning sea." Would President Washington, our "father," be proud?

Above is Gast's famous 1872 painting of (among other things)...MANIFEST DESTINY. What can you identify in the painting that is positive, and what can you see that seems negative?

Above is a great map of the famous Underground Railroad. This secret route guided runaway slaves from their plantations in the south to destinations in the North, Mexico, Florida, or the Caribbean, where slavery was illegal or unpopular. "Conductors" would help runaway slaves get to "stations," or safe houses with being caught by slave catchers and their vicious dogs. "Station masters" were those who helped the runaway slaves at the stations by providing food, clothing, identifications, and medical help. The Underground Railroad was operated by free blacks and "abolitionist" whites - those who did NOT support slavery.
When I was a youngster (LOL) there was a restaurant where I ate from time to time that was rumored to have been part of the Underground Railroad. Apparently, the large basement was a safe haven for slaves to sleep and rest while traveling to Boston and other northern points.

Above is an amazing quilt created by a slave named Harriet Powers. This quilt, titled Pictorial Quilt, is an amazing mixture of African culture, slave life in America, religion, and more. This quilt is currently on display at the MFA in Boston. Power's quilt is a treasured artifact in American History.
